Quorum

Such a number of the officers or members of any body as is
competent by law or constitution to transact business; as, a
quorum of the House of Representatives; a constitutional
quorum was not present.

Note: The term arose from the Latin words, Quorum aliquem
vestrum . . . unum esse volumus (of whom we wish some
one of you to be one), which were used in the
commission formerly issued to justices of the peace in
England, by which commission it was directed that no
business of certain kinds should be done without the
presence of one or more of certain justices specially
designated. Justice of the peace and of the quorum
designates a class of justices of the peace in some of
the United States.

expressly directs that another number may make one; in the latter case any
number who may be present may act, the majority of those present having, as

2. Sometimes the law requires a greater number than a bare majority to
form a quorum, in such case no quorum is present until such a number

Colocasia antiquorum

A name for several aroid plants (Colocasia antiquorum, var.
esculenta, Colocasia macrorhiza, etc.), and their
rootstocks. They have large ovate-sagittate leaves and large
fleshy tuberous rootstocks, which are cooked and used for
food in tropical countries.

meaning flaming. So called in allusion to its color. See

Any bird of the genus Ph[oe]nicopterus. The flamingoes have
webbed feet, very long legs, and a beak bent down as if
broken. Their color is usually red or pink. The American
flamingo is P. ruber; the European is P. antiquorum.

Physalus antiquorum

A very large North Atlantic whalebone whale ({Physalus
antiquorum}, or Balaenoptera physalus). It has a dorsal
fin, and strong longitudinal folds on the throat and belly.
Called also razorback.

Note: It is one of the largest of the whales, somethimes
becoming nearly one hundred feet long, but it is more
slender than the right whales, and is noted for its
swiftness. The name is sometimes applied to other
related species of finback whales.
