[epsilon], [iota], [kappa], [lambda], [mu], [nu], [omicron],
[pi], [rho], [sigma], [tau], [upsilon]. These are called
Cadmean letters.

as the vanquished; probably referring to the battle in
which the soldiers who sprang from the dragon's teeth sown
