    A genus of tropical American shrubs with opposite leaves and
    small white or reddish flowers. The drupes of {Malpighia
    glabra} (formerly Malpighia urens) are eaten under the name
    of Barbadoes cherries.

           black Tartarian, oxheart, morelle or morello, May-duke
           (corrupted from M['e]doc in France).
       (b) The wild cherry; as, Prunus serotina (wild black
           cherry), valued for its timber; Prunus Virginiana
           (choke cherry), an American shrub which bears
           astringent fruit; Prunus avium and Prunus Padus,

    (as if crossberry, fr. kruis cross; for kroesbes, kroesbezie,
    fr. kroes crisp), Sw. krusb[aum]r (fr. krus, krusing, crisp).
