the designations made use of by American type founders,
but is substantially correct for England. Agate,
however, is called ruby, in England, where, also, a
size intermediate between nonpareil and minion is
employed, called emerald.

Point system of type bodies (Type Founding), a system
adopted by the type founders of the United States by which
the various sizes of type have been so modified and
changed that each size bears an exact proportional
relation to every other size. The system is a modification
of a French system, and is based on the pica body. This
pica body is divided into twelfths, which are termed
"points," and every type body consist of a given number of
these points. Many of the type founders indicate the new
sizes of type by the number of points, and the old names
are gradually being done away with. By the point system
type founders cast type of a uniform size and height,
whereas formerly fonts of pica or other type made by
different founders would often vary slightly so that they
could not be used together. There are no type in actual
use corresponding to the smaller theoretical sizes of the
point system. In some cases, as in that of ruby, the term
used designates a different size from that heretofore so
called.

Inch of water, a unit of measure of quantity of water,
being the quantity which will flow through an orifice one
inch square, or a circular orifice one inch in diameter,
in a vertical surface, under a stated constant head; also
called miner's inch, and water inch. The shape of the
orifice and the head vary in different localities. In the
Western United States, for hydraulic mining, the standard
aperture is square and the head from 4 to 9 inches above
its center. In Europe, for experimental hydraulics, the
orifice is usually round and the head from 1/2 of an inch
to 1 inch above its top.

being the quantity which will flow through an orifice one
inch square, or a circular orifice one inch in diameter,
in a vertical surface, under a stated constant head; also

orifice and the head vary in different localities. In the
Western United States, for hydraulic mining, the standard
aperture is square and the head from 4 to 9 inches above
its center. In Europe, for experimental hydraulics, the
orifice is usually round and the head from 1/2 of an inch

Point system of type bodies (Type Founding), a system
adopted by the type founders of the United States by which
the various sizes of type have been so modified and
changed that each size bears an exact proportional
relation to every other size. The system is a modification
of a French system, and is based on the pica body. This
pica body is divided into twelfths, which are termed
"points," and every type body consist of a given number of
these points. Many of the type founders indicate the new
sizes of type by the number of points, and the old names
are gradually being done away with. By the point system
type founders cast type of a uniform size and height,
whereas formerly fonts of pica or other type made by
different founders would often vary slightly so that they
could not be used together. There are no type in actual
use corresponding to the smaller theoretical sizes of the
point system. In some cases, as in that of ruby, the term

Double note (Mus.), a note of double the length of the
semibreve; a breve. See Breve.
Double octave (Mus.), an interval composed of two octaves,
or fifteen notes, in diatonic progression; a fifteenth.
Double pica. See under Pica.
Double play (Baseball), a play by which two players are put
out at the same time.
Double plea (Law), a plea alleging several matters in
answer to the declaration, where either of such matters
alone would be a sufficient bar to the action. --Stephen.
Double point (Geom.), a point of a curve at which two
branches cross each other. Conjugate or isolated points of
a curve are called double points, since they possess most
of the properties of double points (see Conjugate). They
are also called acnodes, and those points where the
branches of the curve really cross are called crunodes.
The extremity of a cusp is also a double point.
Double quarrel. (Eccl. Law) See Duplex querela, under
Duplex.
Double refraction. (Opt.) See Refraction.
Double salt. (Chem.)
(a) A mixed salt of any polybasic acid which has been
saturated by different bases or basic radicals, as the
double carbonate of sodium and potassium,
NaKCO3.6H2O.
(b) A molecular combination of two distinct salts, as
common alum, which consists of the sulphate of
aluminium, and the sulphate of potassium or ammonium.
Double shuffle, a low, noisy dance.
Double standard (Polit. Econ.), a double standard of
monetary values; i. e., a gold standard and a silver
standard, both of which are made legal tender.
Double star (Astron.), two stars so near to each other as
to be seen separate only by means of a telescope. Such
stars may be only optically near to each other, or may be
physically connected so that they revolve round their
common center of gravity, and in the latter case are
called also binary stars.
Double time (Mil.). Same as Double-quick.
Double window, a window having two sets of glazed sashes
with an air space between them.

A nitrogenous, organic base, NH2.OH, resembling ammonia,
and produced by a modified reduction of nitric acid. It is
usually obtained as a volatile, unstable solution in water.
It acts as a strong reducing agent.

Secondary age. (Geol.) The Mesozoic age, or age before the

Secondary alcohol (Chem.), any one of a series of alcohols
which contain the radical CH.OH united with two
hydrocarbon radicals. On oxidation the secondary alcohols
form ketones.
Secondary amputation (Surg.), an amputation for injury,
performed after the constitutional effects of the injury
have subsided.
Secondary axis (Opt.), any line which passes through the
optical center of a lens but not through the centers of
curvature, or, in the case of a mirror, which passes
through the center of curvature but not through the center
of the mirror.
Secondary battery. (Elec.) See under Battery, n., 4.
Secondary circle (Geom. & Astron.), a great circle that
passes through the poles of another great circle and is
therefore perpendicular to its plane.
Secondary circuit, Secondary coil (Elec.), a circuit or
coil in which a current is produced by the induction of a
current in a neighboring circuit or coil called the
primary circuit or coil.
Secondary color, a color formed by mixing any two primary
colors in equal proportions.
Secondary coverts (Zool.), the longer coverts which overlie
the basal part of the secondary quills of a bird. See
Illust. under Bird.
Secondary crystal (Min.), a crystal derived from one of the
primary forms.
Secondary current (Elec.), a momentary current induced in a
closed circuit by a current of electricity passing through
the same or a contiguous circuit at the beginning and also
at the end of the passage of the primary current.
Secondary evidence, that which is admitted upon failure to
obtain the primary or best evidence.
Secondary fever (Med.), a fever coming on in a disease
after the subsidence of the fever with which the disease
began, as the fever which attends the outbreak of the
eruption in smallpox.
Secondary hemorrhage (Med.), hemorrhage occuring from a
wounded blood vessel at some considerable time after the
original bleeding has ceased.
Secondary planet. (Astron.) See the Note under Planet.
Secondary qualities, those qualities of bodies which are
not inseparable from them as such, but are dependent for
their development and intensity on the organism of the
percipient, such as color, taste, odor, etc.
Secondary quills or Secondary remiges (Zool.), the quill
feathers arising from the forearm of a bird and forming a
row continuous with the primaries; -- called also
secondaries. See Illust. of Bird.
Secondary rocks or Secondary strata (Geol.), those lying
between the Primary, or Paleozoic, and Tertiary (see
Primary rocks, under Primary); -- later restricted to
strata of the Mesozoic age, and at present but little
used.
Secondary syphilis (Med.), the second stage of syphilis,
including the period from the first development of
constitutional symptoms to the time when the bones and the
internal organs become involved.
Secondary tint, any subdued tint, as gray.
Secondary union (Surg.), the union of wounds after
suppuration; union by the second intention.

One of a group of phospholipids (nitrogenous phosphorized
fatty substances), present in all living cells and
particularly evident in nervous tissue. The cephalins consist
of glycerol phosphate in which the two free hydroxyls of the
glycerol are esterified with fatty acids, and the phosphate
forms an ester linkage to the hydroxyl of ethanolamine. The
phosphate may be linked to the alpha (end) or beta (middle)
hydroxyl of the glycerol portion. The natural isomers are of
the alpha form, and have the general formula
R.O.CH2.CHOR'.CH2.O.PO2.O.CH2.CH2.NH2, where R and R' are
the acyl residues of long-chain fatty acids, which may be the
same or different. [Also spelled kephalin.]

acid. It is used as a mordant in dyeing.

like, common alum. It is regarded as a double sulphate of
chromium and potassium.
Chrome green
(a) The green oxide of chromium, Cr2O3, used in enamel
painting, and glass staining.
(b) A pigment made by mixing chrome yellow with Prussian
blue.
Chrome red, a beautiful red pigment originally prepared
from the basic chromate of lead, but now made from red
oxide of lead.
Chrome yellow, a brilliant yellow pigment, PbCrO4, used
by painters.
